Audi 100 CD

Of all the cars I've personally owned thus far, the Audi 100 CD was up there with the best, and such a step up from my previous car, a Holden Calais (a 1988 model), it was unbelievable. A deep metallic blue, I chose the Audi because I liked the look of it, it got rave reviews in road tests and it came from the Volkswagen stable, which to my wife and I meant it was going to be reliable. And reliable it was, and comfortable too.

The C100 range was based on the NSU RO80, the first car to use the Wankel engine, but which died at childbirth when Volkswagen took over NSU and canned it. The Audi was similar in shape and size to the RO80 and equally well equipped. Six years old when I purchased it, my Audi had the most comfortable seats of any car I'd owned. It was quiet, had ample power on the open road, was incredibly fuel efficient thanks to its wind efficient shape which, to my amazement, allowed us to drive with the sunroof open with practically no wind noise at all. The fuel tank was huge - it was the first and only car I've ever driven that could travel from Sydney to Melbourne without needing its fuel tank topped up along the way. I'd never heard of a car having a five cylinder motor before and was amazed at how smooth it ran. I could have stayed with the Audi forever but unfortunately the business fell on hard times and it had to go. The current crop of Audis all had their roots in this car, which goes a long way to explain why they are so good and so popular.
